As the holidays approach, it’s hard not to admit that there is one thing looming on everyone’s mind: Covid-19. For many, the holiday season is already considered to be stressful: it can be a financially burdensome and emotionally draining time—and none of this is made better by lockdown measures. The ongoing pandemic ensures that this will be a Christmas like no other. But let’s take a moment to focus on the positive: we owe it to ourselves to look on the bright side, especially when things seem darkest.
Beyond ideologies and differing opinions, we are all people. Regardless of race, colour, creed, class, or gender: we are all just human beings, and many of us are afraid in the midst of a lonely time. If there is anything to be taken from this, it’s that you are not alone.
Behind every mask is a person, and because of the pandemic, you have more things in common with that person than ever before. We’ve all been affected, we’re all worried about our loved ones, and we’re all anxious about the future. Nobody is alone right now; you have 7.8 billion brothers and sisters, and all of them can relate to what you are going through.
It is inspiring to look at the ways in which people have come together (without physically coming together) as a result of the pandemic. Stories abound of anonymous donations, random acts of kindness, and compassion when we need it most.
If you find yourself feeling down during these holidays, remember that you’re not alone. Try to focus on the positive: the pandemic has given us the opportunity to show that “many persons strive for high ideals, and everywhere life is full of heroism.” Take some inspiration from your brothers and sisters.
