BC residential care communities have really benefited by the introduction of the BC Care Aide Registry. This registry helps to protect the residents of residential care communities by “establishing and improving standards of care”. We will be looking at what this means and how it benefits senior care communities.
The BC Care Aide & Community Health Worker Registry requires that all care aides and community health workers working in publicly funded settings are registered. This registry allows for the creation of “a common process for employers in reporting and investigating patient, resident and client abuse complaints” (https://www.cachwr.bc.ca/About-the-Registry/Role-Mandate.aspx). Essentially, this means that care aides must adhere to strict standards to maintain their license, and future employers will be made aware of any past transgressions. This protects residential care community residents by making sure that care aides in trusted positions are professional and will not abuse or mistreat the residents.
The registry also helps senior care communities by establishing standards in care that participants must follow. This means that all care aides must attend a provincially mandated program to be recognized, ensuring that all care aides are properly educated and suitable.
Furthermore, the registry also promotes professional development for care aides. This includes educational modules, as well as an opportunity for continued professional growth. Learning new ways for best practice can help to make sure the best care is given to senior care community residents.
